IBC Factsheet on Air Pollution in the Western Balkans
Addressing Air Pollution in the Western Balkans: A Regional Knowledge Product by the IBC on Environment and Climate Change
At the request of the UN in North Macedonia, the IBC on Environment and Climate Change prepared a brief knowledge product on air pollution in the Western Balkans. The brief maps the current air pollution landscape across the region, highlighting key sources, and cross-border implications. It also provides a short overview of major regional initiatives and policy frameworks aimed at improving air quality, while outlining ongoing activities of the UN development system in support of cleaner air. Additionally, the product identifies areas where the UN can add value, including strengthening regional cooperation, supporting evidence-based policymaking, and facilitating partnerships that advance integrated solutions to air pollution. By bringing together regional analysis, existing initiatives, and UN system efforts, the brief aims to support Resident Coordinators and UN Country Teams in identifying opportunities for coordinated action and stronger engagement with national and regional partners.
The factsheet was technically led by the IBC Air Pollution Task Team in close collaboration with the RC Office in North Macedonia, with financial support from UNEP.
